Orvieto

Orvieto is a beautiful medieval city on the border between Umbria and Lazio, easily reachable by motorway (1 hour and a half from both Rome and Florence).

An ancient city, whose origins date back to the 9th century BC, with the first Etruscan settlements in the area inside the tuffaceous caves (which can still be visited today).

Orvieto is defined (not surprisingly) “High and strange city” by Fazio degli Uberti in his Dittamondo; “High”, because the tuff cliff on which the city strikes the visitor from the moment you take the motorway exit; from here, paying attention, the typical Gothic spiers of the Duomo are already visible. “Strange”, because it hides many elements of medieval and Renaissance tradition and iconography, as well as hosting one of the most particular engineering works in history: the famous St. Patrick’s Well.

When you hear about Orvieto, your first thoughts go to the Cathedral and the well of San Patrizio, but this enchanting village of Etruscan origin is capable of offering many other beauties: from art to history, from gastronomy to incredible landscapes.

Full of streets and lanes that change appearance and colors according to the light during the day, but also of caves and underground tunnels. Each house built on the top of the cliff was built with tuff taken from the subsoil, which gave rise to a labyrinth of caves that can still be visited. You can enjoy the beauty of Orvieto in different ways: walking in the town, visiting the alleys, its marvelous churches and prestigious buildings; observing it from afar, exactly from the vantage point the “belvedere” where it is possible to appreciate the majesty of the cliff compared to the surrounding countryside; and finally exploring its subsoil, retracing caves, labyrinths and underground tunnels on which Orvieto lives.

The magic of this small village enchants not only the tourists, but its own inhabitants, and I would like to introduce you to those places that every day make me appreciate my hometown Orvieto is divided in two by the main street Corso Cavour, which starts from Piazza Cahen, where there are the Well of San Patrizio, the funicular and the Albornoz fortress, to get to Piazza della Repubblica, with the church of Sant ‘Andrea and the town hall. Halfway through, we find the Torre del Moro, on which it is possible to climb and enjoy a view of Orvieto from above. Exactly where the tower is located, the Corso is cut in two by Via del Duomo, which leads us to the cathedral, and by Via della Costituente, which leads instead to Piazza del Popolo. This crossing point represents the center of the town and it is possible to observe on the four corner buildings, the districts into which Orvieto is divided: Olmo, Corsica, Serancia and Stella.

If you are interested in living Orvieto, not only by visiting the main tourist places of the city, we are able with our partners to organize exclusive guided tours, with people who will make your stay in the City of Tufo unforgettable.
